
As a result of preliminary vote count (48%), Central Electoral Committee announces that Romanian President Traian Basescu and Social Democratic Party (PSD) leader Mircea Geoana will go into runoff, Vzglyad newspaper informs Nov. 23.
Under CEC, Basescu polled 32.8% votes, whereas Geoana – 29,1%.
Basescu has positively hailed that most voters are for the unicameral parliament with 300 seats instead of a bicameral with 500 seats for MPs and Senators, ITAR-TASS says. He called the public to wait till the final official results of the race to be voiced by CEC.
Presidential elections and the parliamentary referendum held in Romania on Nov. 22 had twelve candidates.
Majority of the voters supported the incumbent President from the beginning of campaign.
