YEREVAN. – Armenia has got many friends and together we want to contribute to fair and just parliamentary elections in Armenia, US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern told reporters.

“We are trying to be optimists and to see the bright side,” the American envoy said commenting on the question what violations have been observed during the pre-election campaign.

According to him, it is very important to train the members of the election commission but the most important is the political will of law enforcement agencies, state structures, political parties and the opposition to conduct fair and just elections.

The ambassador also stressed the importance of the participation of many observers in the monitoring of the elections.

“There are many positive facts. But there are also concerning facts,” the ambassador said.

He meant statements about unequal conditions for political parties and the use of administrative resources.

Eight political parties and one block have presented their nominations – Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir, opposition Armenian National Congress, opposition Heritage Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic Party of Armenia and United Armenians Party.

For entering the National Assembly, parties must poll over 5% of votes, while blocks - over 7%.

The election campaign will be held till May 5 - the day prior to elections when campaigning is banned. The parliamentary elections will be held from 8 am to 8 pm on May 6, 2012.
