YEREVAN. – According to preliminary results of Sunday’s National Assembly (NA) elections, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA)—which is led by President Serzh Sargsyan—received the majority of the new parliamentary seats.   

Armenia’s NA comprises 131 MPs whose 90 are elected by way of proportional lists, whereas 41 are voted in through majority election system.  

In line with the preliminary data, which the Central Electoral Commission announced, the RPA received 44.05% of the proportional ballots, as a result of counting 98 percent of the votes, and this means the RPA will have 40 proportional seats at the new NA.

In addition, the RPA candidates won in 28 majority election constituencies.

Hence, and in line with current data, the RPA will have 68 MPs in the new NA, in the case when 66 mandates are necessary to form a majority at Parliament. 

Eight political parties and one bloc participated in the parliament elections in Armenia: Republican Party of Armenian, Prosperous Armenia Party, Orinats Yerkir, Armenian National Congress, Heritage Party, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, the Communist Party of Armenia, Democratic Party of Armenia and United Armenians Party. For entering the 131-seat National Assembly (Parliament), the parties must poll over 5% of votes, while blocs - over 7%.
