YEREVAN. – It is difficult to immediately calculate all the results of Turkey’s announcement about temporary termination of relations with the EU, head of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences Ruben Safrastyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

According to him, one thing is for sure, with that statement Turkey embarked a slippery road regarding the relations with the EU.

“I hope that the EU countries will not neglect this fact,” Ruben Safrastyan said.

At the same time the expert mentioned that Ankara’s move was predictable. As Safrastyan stated, the Cyprus issue is the main obstacle on Turkey’s road to European integration.

“Turkey holds occupation troops in Cyprus, it does not recognize Cyprus, that is, actually, aggression towards a member state of the EU, the organization which Turkey wants to become a member of,” Ruben Safrastyan concluded.
