BUDAPEST. – Only the recognition of the Armenian Genocide by Hungary may resume suspended diplomatic relations with Armenia, head of the Armenian National Autonomy of Hungary Nikoghos Hakobyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Commenting on the Hungarian FM János Martonyi’s statement on normalizing relations with Armenia and the role of the Armenian community in Hungary, Hakobyan said that the Hungarian authorities have turned to the community on this regard, but were rejected.

“As a matter of fact, the community was the one, which appeared in the worst situation due to suspension of ties,” Hakobyan claimed adding now the community has activated steps towards the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. “Only the recognition may resume relations with Armenia.”

Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that Ramil Safarov, a lieutenant in the Azerbaijani military, was extradited on August 31 from Hungary, where he was serving a life sentence – and with no expression of either regret or remorse – for the premeditated axe murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnership for Peace program in Budapest back in 2004. And Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan announced on August 31 that Armenia is suspending its diplomatic ties with Hungary.
