ETCHMIADZIN. – The Conference of European Churches (CEC) Central Committee convened its annual meeting in the Greek island of Crete on September 13 and 14.

During the event, Hungary’s extradition of Ramil Safarov and his subsequent release in Azerbaijan was likewise discussed, Information System of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin reports.

The Committee members expressed regret over the Azerbaijani president’s intolerable pardoning of the criminal, and extended their solidarity and support to the Armenian people and the Armenian Apostolic Church. And, in this connection, the CEC Central Committee addressed a formal message to the Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II.

Separately, Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church—also known as the Indian Orthodox Church—Primate Baselios Mar Thoma Paulose II likewise extended his support to the Armenian people because of this painful reality.

Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier that Ramil Safarov, a lieutenant in the Azerbaijani military, was extradited on August 31 from Hungary, where he was serving a life sentence—and with no expression of either regret or remorse—for the premeditated axe murder of Armenian lieutenant Gurgen Margaryan, in his sleep, during a NATO Partnership for Peace program in Budapest back in 2004.

As expected, Ramil Safarov’s return to Baku was welcomed, as was his act of murder, by the officials of president Ilham Aliyev’s government and much of Azerbaijani society, and the Azerbaijani president immediately granted him a pardon.

And Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan announced on August 31 that Armenia is suspending its diplomatic ties with Hungary.

Ramil Safarov’s pardoning is condemned by virtually all international organizations.
