YEREVAN. – The situation in Syria is growing worse because of the guerilla’s unobstructed infiltration from the northern regions. And Turkey—upon the immediate initiative of which the insurgents are receiving weapons and funding—contributes to this, Social Democratic Hunchakian Party’s Aleppo and Northern Syria regions board member Vasken Mesrobian said during a press conference on Wednesday.

“The Syrian Armenians and local Armenian [political] parties have always been in solidarity with Bashar al-Assad and the people of Syria. The Syrian-Armenian population likewise suffers from the military operations,” he stated.

Reflecting on the Syrian Armenians who have left the country, Mesrobian informed that some of them moved to Armenia, whereas there is no information on 5-6 thousand others. The Syrian-Armenians have not yet made any decisions on their future courses of action.

“The matter of educating the Syrian-Armenian children in Armenia is regulated. They have been allocated a school where education will be conducted with the Arab curriculum. The Great House of Cilicia [of the Armenian Apostolic Church] will cover the school’s costs,” he said.

Vasken Mesrobian also stated that there aren’t any active military actions in the vicinity of Kessab, the sole Armenian village in Syria’s northern ridge, but the situation is worse around Homs. In this city, however, the Armenians do not take part in the conflict because the government forces are protecting them.

“A religious or an ethnic nuance should not be given to the developments unrolling in Syria. The current unstable situation is a result of foreign intervention,” Mesrobian noted.
