YEREVAN. – President Serzh Sargsyan and Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) Chairman Gagik Tsarukyan are the country’s most prominent political figures. A Gallup International Association survey that was conducted in Armenia has come up with such result.

The Association’s Armenia Office Director Aram Navasardyan and Research Department Head Gayane Dajunts presented the Gallup poll results during a press conference on Friday.

Navasardyan noted that to the question as to who is Armenia’s most prominent political figure, 32, 29, and 9 percent of the respondents said Sargsyan, Tsarukyan, and second President Robert Kocharyan respectively. Opposition Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian, and opposition bloc Armenian National Congress leader and First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan received 3 percent apiece. The other candidates received around 2 percent, and 7 percent did not answer.

To the query as to whether Armenia’s presidential elections were to be held next Sunday whom they would vote for, the respondents answered as follows: Serzh Sargsyan, 28 percent; Gagik Tsarukyan, 19 percent; Robert Kocharyan, 11 percent; Raffi Hovannisian, 4 percent; Levon Ter-Petrosyan, 3 percent; former FM and PAP MP Vartan Oskanian, 3 percent; opposition ARF Dashnaktsutyun Party MP Vahan Hovhannisyan, 1 percent; and coalition Government’s junior member Orinats Yerkir (Rule of Law) Party Chairman Arthur Baghdasaryan, 1 percent. Sixteen percent did not answer, whereas 11 percent said no one.

To the question as to why, even though Armenia’s citizens complain about the dire socioeconomic conditions in the country, they still prefer Serzh Sargsyan, Aram Navasardyan noted that he does not see an organized and a united opposition in Armenia’s current political spectrum, and, perhaps, that is why the people likewise are unable to make a decision.
