YEREVAN.- Positions of Kemalism are weakening in Turkey, said political scientist Ara Papyan. The analyst believes the Islamism element is increasing in present-day Turkey.

“Turkey is following the path of political Islam posing a major threat to the West. Our main goal to make sure that the West is considering Armenia more as an ally and Turkey – as an enemy,” Papyan, who is heading Modus Vivendi center, told reporters on Tuesday.

He recalled that the present-day Turkey has the 15th largest economy and the 7th army in the world. Turkey’s independence is somehow irritating the West, and the United States have started considering a new ally in the region instead of Turkey. Such an ally, the expert deems, may  become the emerging Kurdish state. He stressed that Kurdish and Armenian issues are closely related to each other, thus the Armenian issue will get certain importance.
