Over the past year, 119 journalists were killed while performing their duties. 2012 surpassed the previous years with the number of journalists killed, according to a report by the International Press Institute (IPI), Lenta.ru report.

The International Press Institute includes in its reports all the journalists killed as a result of their professional activities or during the execution of their professional duties. Syria has become the most dangerous country for the journalists in 2012: because of continuing  fights between government forces and militants 36 journalists and other media representatives were killed.

The second highest mortality rate was among the journalists in Somalia: 16 reporters were killed there. Middle East and Africa have been named as the most dangerous regions for the journalists, and among the most dangerous countries for media IPI named Mexico, Pakistan and the Philippines.

According to the International Press Institute, in 2011, 82 journalists were killed, in 2010, 102 journalists lost their life because of their profession.
