The opening of Georgia-Abkhazia section of the railway is a key issue for Armenia. This means you can transport goods by rail to and from Russia through Georgia, which will improve transport logistics and reduce costs for importers and exporters, Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said in an interview with Interfax agency.

A large part of Armenia’s border is blocked by Azerbaijan and Turkey. Therefore, a new transport and transit corridor creates additional conditions for the development and expansion of production, trade and tourism, he said. However, Sargsyan said Armenia is not carrying out lobbying or mediation activities.

Armenian premier also touched upon North-South road project implemented jointly with the Asian Development Bank with credit resources totaling $500 million.

“We are very much interested in the project because Armenia still has no modern highways that would meet international standards. This, of course, is very expensive road – the total cost of the North-South highway is estimated at $1.5 billion. ADB is also coordinating work with other lenders who will continue to participate in funding of the project,” he said.
