“In my view, the matter is contradictory. On the one hand, it is one of people’s natural rights: the right to movement, and any attempt at obstructing that right is deplorable; on the other hand, this is happening during a conflict,” the ambassador recalled.
In his words, no questions would have risen had there not been the Karabakh conflict. “We flew even during the active phase of the conflict. At that time there were no complaints that we—true, it’s about the mediators—are using that airport. [But] We were not the only ones using the air route, and that did not generate any complaints,” the Russian diplomat noted.
“This is an artificially inflamed scandal. If you need something in return for [Ramil] Safarov [the Azerbaijani army officer who had killed with an axe Armenian soldier Gurgen Margaryan in Budapest back in 2004 and who was released in Azerbaijan], here you go, the airport,” Vladimir Kazimirov said.
