YEREVAN. - Armenia must fulfill its state obligations and recognize, at the level of the country’s lawmaking body, the 1988 Armenian Genocide of Sumgait, Azerbaijan. Armenia’s first Human Rights Defender, “Against Legal Arbitrariness” Foundation Executive Director, and public activist Larisa Alaverdyan stated this on Wednesday during a roundtable discussion devoted to the 25th anniversary of the pogroms in this city.

“To this day, the people of Azerbaijan are unable to find a format for their position toward the pogroms of Sumgait. [And] the international community did not give a proper assessment to this crime,” she noted.

The analyst also expressed a conviction that it is solely in Azerbaijan where racist, neo-Nazi policies against another nation are welcome.

“That is why Armenia is being deprived of the opportunities to take part in international projects,” Alaverdyan noted, but added that Armenia has made a significant progress in information strategy.

“We need to conduct a proactive policy,” she noted.

As per Armenia’s first ombudswoman, Azerbaijani president Ilham Aliyev has proved that murder is considered a public service in Azerbaijan.
