The Roman Catholic cardinals’ conclave, which was convened at The Vatican, selected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina as the next Pope.

The white smoke, which symbolizes the election of the new Pope, poured from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday evening and, shortly thereafter, Cardinal Bergoglio—now, as Pope Francis—appeared on the balcony over the entrance to St. Peter’s basilica, and under the Latin exclamations, “Habemus Papam!” that is, “We Have a Pope!”

The newly elected Pontiff of the Catholics greeted the faithful that had gathered with the traditional papal address, “Urbi et Orbi,” that is, “to the City [of Rome] and to the World.”

To note, the previous Pope, Benedict XVI, had resigned on February 28th, saying he no longer had the strength to fulfill the duties of his office.
