Czech Ambassador to the U.S. called on the Americans not to confuse the Czech Republic with Chechnya.
Petr Gandalovic issued a statement regarding the Boston terrorist attack, saying he “was deeply shocked by the tragedy that occurred in Boston earlier this month.”
However, Ambassador expressed his concern about “misunderstanding” in the social media.
“As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect. The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities - the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation,” he said in a statement.
According to the media reports, Tamerlan Tsarnaev and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev were ethnic Chechens. Many American social network users confused Chechens with Czechs.
The brothers were involved in shooting in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus. Tamerlan Tsarnaev and a policeman were shot dead. Later Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was detained.
