South Caucasus needs the support of the international community more than ever, since the prospects of conflict resolution are not seen and there is still risk that they may resume, Georgian PM said.

Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili on Monday addressed the participants of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s 83rd Rose-Roth seminar hosted by Tbilisi.

“Unfortunately, there is still the risk of regional conflicts. The region has emerged as one of the most difficult areas of post-Soviet transformation. In this small area there are two interstate and three regional conflicts. The prospects for resolving these conflicts are not visible yet. Today, South Caucasus needs maximum involvement and support of the international community more than ever,” Ivanishvili said.

As reported by Gruziya Online, speaking about the prospects of Georgia’s joining NATO, Ivanishvili said that some processes are impeding membership to NATO.

“We are absolutely ready to join NATO, but some processes interfere with this, in particular, this is compounded by the fact that a part of our territories is occupied. However, I think thanks to our activity and continuation of the strategy, Georgia will become a NATO member country in the near future,” he added.

The 3-day seminar will discuss the unique geopolitical developments in the South Caucasus, the Euro-Atlantic integration of the region as well as domestic challenges in Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.
