BEIRUT. – Clashes and unrest in Tripoli, the second largest city in Lebanon, have not affected situation in Beirut and other regions, editor of local Armenian newspaper said.

The clashes between the Sunnis and the Alawites escalated on Sunday night after a man was killed as a result of collission between Islamists from Jund al-Sham and Fatah movement in the Palestinian camp in Lebanon.

Such incidents may reoccur, but are likely to have limited influence, chief editor of Aztag daily Shahan Kandaharian told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

“The situation in Tripoli is relatively calm. We [Armenians] have a church, school and community there. Thanks God, they were not in danger,” he said.

Tripoli events have not affected Beirut with its large Armenian community, he said. However, heated political discussions are underway. Draft bill on elections is being elaborated to organize the upcoming parliamentary vote.
