YEREVAN. – The World Environment Day was marked Wednesday in Armenia at the Botanical Garden of capital city Yerevan.

In connection with this event, Armenia’s Nature Protection Ministry and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) signed at the garden an agreement with respect to a project on sustainable management of Armenia’s forests and pastures.

Nature Protection Minister Aram Harutyunyan noted that Armenia’s Lake Sevan Basin—specifically, the Vardenis region—is selected as the area for the implementation of this project. In his words, this project will assist in the reduction of the adverse affects which climate change has on the mountain ecosystems of Armenia.

“Along the lines of this project, a new forest zone with sixty and greater hectares will be created, [and] the seed plot of Martuni [city] will be reconstructed and reequipped,” the minister said, in particular.

In his turn, Bradley Busetto, the newly appointed UN Resident Coordinator/UNDP Resident Representative in Armenia, expressed his satisfaction by the programs that were carried out in Armenia to this day, and showed willingness to further increase cooperation with the Nature Protection Ministry.
