YEREVAN. – Georgian law enforcers on Friday detained the brother of Armenian activist Vigen Chakhalyan.

Information about detention of Armen Chakhalyan was confirmed for Armenian News-NEWS.am by the head of civil movement “Multinational Georgia” Arnold Stepanyan.

A scuffle broke out between Armenian youth on Friday evening, he said. It involved a group of 150-160 Armenians, including underage.

“The guys called Armen Chakhlayan as he has authority with young people of Ninotsminda and Akhlkalaki, asking him to pull them apart. Police was at the scene when he arrived. Chakhalyan and his 30 friends were detained and transported to Akhaltsikha,” he said.

According to rumors, Chakhalyan was detained in an attempt to exert pressure on his brother for him not to be so active in his social and political activities.

“New government’s approach to the Armenians of Javakhk is similar to that of Saakashvili.  New authorities continue Saakashvili’s policy on national minorities,” Stepanyan added.

Gruziya Online agency was the first to report about Armen Chakhalyan’s arrest.
