YEREVAN. – Detention of Armen Chakhalyan, the brother of Armenian activist, is not politically motivated, expert Haykaz Alvrtsyan said.

Javakhk is a region where social and everyday incidents are growing into political ones.

“Political context depends on authorities’ approach. I do not think that this issue must be viewed from this viewpoint. We do not have any problems in Javakhk at the moment,” he noted. Alvrtsyan added that it is better to wait for assessments of the Georgian side.

He believes the situation in Javakhk will not change during a long period of time.

“I do not think there will be crucial changes. Development prospects for Javakhk must be based on goodwill of two states to turn the region into territory of cooperation,” he said.

On June 28, seventeen people were detained in the clash between Armenian young people in Javakhk, Armenian-populated region of Georgia. Among them was Armen Chakhalyan.
