YEREVAN. –Armenian-Georgina activist Vahagn Chakhalyan said his brother had been charged with hooliganism in Georgia.

Speaking to Armenian News-NEWS.am, he said his brother Armen Chakhlyan will remain in custody for two months.

“The defense applied for release on bail, but the request was denied because Armen has refused to cooperate with the investigating authorities and did not plead guilty. How can a person plead guilty if he did nothing illegal?” Chakhalyan said.

Chakhalyan noted that he considers the incident is politically motivated, as the only arrested out of 50 detainees is his brother.

A scuffle broke out between Armenian youth on June 28 evening and involved a group of 150-160 Armenians, including underage. The guys called Armen Chakhlayan as he has authority with young people of Ninotsminda and Akhlkalaki, asking him to pull them apart. Police was at the scene when he arrived. Chakhalyan and his 30 friends were detained and transported to Akhaltsikha.
