Two days ago, the Turkish police detained four citizens of Armenia that visited the City of Van and kept them at a police station for about four hours.

Journalist Mher Arshakyan and Antares Publishing House Director Armen Martirosyan were among the detainees.

Arshakyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am that they were detained because he had made a video recording of a Turkish police officers’ dwelling, but without knowing what it was.

The news reporter wanted to make a recording of the buildings that were constructed after the earthquake in Van, and thus to make a comparison between the quake-aftermath-elimination processes in Van and in Armenia’s Gyumri city.

“[But] it turned out that it was a dwelling for police officers. They approached [us] saying recording is prohibited and took us to the [police] station,” Arshakyan said.

At the police station, the journalist’s video camera was taken and the recorded video was inspected. The Turkish police had attempted to find out whether or not the Armenian detainees were terrorists.

When they were convinced that these Armenian citizens are not terrorists, they apologized and took them to the post-earthquake pre-fabricated homes which the journalist wanted to record.

Mher Arshakyan added there was normal conduct toward them, no violence was exerted, and no video recording was erased at the police station.
