This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics went to scientists Francois Englert and Peter Higgs for the theory of how particles acquire mass.

The  statement posted on the official website said they were awarded “for the theoretical discovery of a mechanism that contributes to our understanding of the origin of mass of subatomic particles, and which recently was confirmed through the discovery of the predicted fundamental particle, by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider”

Higgs boson was initially theorized in 1964, and tentatively confirmed to exist on 14 March 2013.
