YEREVAN. – Despite strong competitors, the Armenian national chess team is “combat-ready” ahead of the European and the world team championships, and it has great expectations.

Grandmaster (GM) Levon Aronian—who plays first board for the three-time World Chess Olympiad champions and the World Team Chess champions Armenian national team, and who is ranked second in the FIDE ratings—told Armenian News-NEWS.am that if they manage to enter the top three in both tournaments, this can be considered a good result.

“But I will only be happy if we can win both tournaments. We are trying to come out as the winners; we do not think about anything else,” Aronian added.

To note, the World Chess Team Championship will be held from November 24 to December 6 in Antalya, Turkey. And it was in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2012, that the Armenian national team were crowned World Chess Olympiad champions for a third time.

“I believe it will turn out well this time, too. We like playing in Turkey,” Levon Aronian said.

“We had a lot of success in Turkey. So, we can say that there is no psychological problem for us,” GM Gabriel Sargissian in turn told Armenian News-NEWS.am.
