ISTANBUL. – A family, which had returned to its Armenian roots in Turkey, was able to succeed at court with respect to sending their child to an Armenian school.

The family was not able to send their child to an school because the Turkish National Education Ministry was arguing that the child is not Armenian, reports Agos Armenian weekly of Istanbul.

The family had petitioned to the court. And the court, basing itself on the report which the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople had submitted, confirmed that the child’s parents are Armenian, and therefore it ruled that not enrolling the child in an Armenian school is unfounded.

The family’s attorney noted that this ruling could set a precedent for the children of other similar Armenian families. He added that, according to the ruling, the use of codes for determining a person’s ethnic identity is contrary to the law.
