Members of the organization on protection of migrants’ rights and representatives of the Armenian community of Catalonia held a demonstration near an internment center for foreigners in Barcelona.

Demonstrators demanded clear investigation into the case of 32-year-old Armenian citizen detained in camps for foreigners, El Diario reported. Alik Manukyan was convicted for illegal weapons possession and robbery.

Two other migrants who could shed light on the incident were deported to their home countries.  

On December 3 the body of Alik Manukyan was found. According to police, Manukyan was taken to a cell for violent conduct, and about 3am he was found hanged by shoelaces.

Migrants tell another story, claiming that Manukyan did not get along with the police, and screams and moans were heard from the cell where he was taken.

One of the Armenian organization of Catalonia “Armenia a Catalunya Aradat” said they would fight for a fair investigation.

“Suicide is not logical. After spending several years in prison, he had only a day left before his release,” his friend said.
