The number of visitors to the ruins of the ancient Armenian capital city of Ani, which are located in present-day Turkey, increased in 2013, as compared to the previous year.

Necmettin Alp, Director of the Museum of Kars Province where the ruins are located, told Anadolu news agency of Turkey that this year a total of 12,510 local and 11,220 foreign tourists visited the ruins of Ani. He noted that this figure is 10-percent more than last year’s visits.

The Turkish official stressed that the ruins of Ani are very important for tourism development in Kars and the region, and he added that the ruins also acquire a peculiarity because they are located on the border between Armenia and Turkey.

In Alp’s words, the cleaning and the excavations around the Ani Cathedral commenced in September 2014, and they will continue in 2014, too.

To note, the words “Armenian” and “Armenia” cannot be found on any of the signs that are placed in front of the ancient Armenian constructions that still stand in Ani.
