YEREVAN. – The passing year for Armenia needs to be assessed negatively, from the perspective of absolute loss of independence and sovereignty.

Opposition Free Democrats Party Vice-Chairwoman Anush Sedrakyan stated the aforementioned at a press conference on Tuesday.

“But the recent protests played an unprecedented positive role. Every citizen of the country finally woke up from the long sleep.

“Security [of Armenia] is not the Russian [military] base [stationed in Gyumri city], but rather that the [stomach of the] person is full, his place is warm and promising, [and] he lives in fair and secure conditions,” Sedrakyan stressed.

The politician expressed a doubt as to whether Russia is secure enough to ensure others’ security. In her words, the Russian-led Customs Union cannot become a reality because Russia’s demographics are irretrievably lost.

Following the talks that were held on September 3 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
