YEREVAN. – Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan believes that Nagorno-Karabakh issue cannot be an obstacle on the way to Armenia’s accession to Customs Union.

Karabakh issue was discussed in the context of Armenia’s membership, PM said in response to a question about Kazakhstan president Nursultan Nazarbayev’s remarks.

Nursultan Nazarbayev on Tuesday stated that Kazakhstan stands ready to sign the “road map” on Armenia’s accession to the Russian-led Customs Union, but with a special position: it asks for a clarification on the matter of the borders of the Customs Union, in connection with the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.

“President of Kazakhstan got a clear answer of the President of Armenia: there are no customs checkpoints between Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh and there would be no such checkpoints,” PM said, adding that despite Nazarbayev’s remark the roadmap was approved.

“We are confident that political issues cannot be transferred to the area of CU membership.”

He added that Tatyana Valovaya, member of the Eurasian Economic Commission Board, shared this view.

In this context, Sargsyan recalled that Karabakh issue was not discussed neither during accession to WTO, nor during  talks on trade area with EU and agreement on free trade in CIS area.

“I think Customs Union will not be an exception. NKR issue cannot be an obstacle,” he concluded.
