YEREVAN. – Former Armenian president Robert Kocharyan said he does not understand current government’s logics on hiding the real gas price that led to accumulation of a huge debt.

In his interview with 2nd.am website, former president reflected on gas issues, cumulative pension system and his possible comeback to politics.

The recent developments over gas price led to serious “reputation losses for the government”, he believes.

“The government gave no precise explanations on what is going on. It would be easier to apologize. Even some MPs from ruling party felt somehow embarrassed while voting on gas agreement,” he emphasized.

Kocharyan admitted that selling 20 percent of ArmRusgasprom shares to Russia’s Gazprom was an “unpleasant” deal, but is logical in terms of business. However, providing of monopoly till 2043 is much more serious.

“By this agreement, Armenian government has become an observer not only in ArmRusgasprom board of directors, but Armenia’s entire gas sector,” he said, adding that Gazprom never offered such conditions during his term in office.

Former president is also skeptical about cumulative pension system, noting the government lacks funds to compensate losses in case of possible economic crisis.

“I am negative about it because of the high probability of failure with the loss of funds of our citizens,” he added.

Kocharyan assured he cannot remain indifferent about the key issues regardless of his comeback to politics.

“I am not going to argue with anyone, especially with the prime minister. His latest article shows that he is beyond recovery. It is pointless to argue with a person who for the 6th year in a row is justifying his failures by the actions predecessors,” he concluded.
