In actual fact, Armenia is not yet a Customs Union (CU) member. The situation will resolve once it becomes a CU member, since the restrictions for entering Russia do not apply to members of the organization.

Russian Analyst Mikhail Aleksandrov told the abovementioned to Armenian News-NEWS.am commenting on the restrictions for the citizens of those countries that make use of the non-visa procedures with Russia.

In Aleksandrov’s words, after entering the Russian-led Customs Union, the Armenian citizens can travel to Russia without problems.

“This will happen once the single economic environment is formally established within the framework of the Customs Union. This implies a general procedure not solely for products, but for the transportation of the workforce.

“As long as Armenia is not a Customs Union member, Russia cannot enact selective rules for the CIS member countries. [But] several months have remained for [Armenia’s CU] membership,” Mikhail Aleksandrov stated, in particular.

Following the talks that were held on September 3, 2013 in Moscow between Armenian and Russian Presidents Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin, Sargsyan had announced that Armenia plans to join the Customs Union and subsequently engage in the formation of the Eurasian Economic Union. And the road map for Armenia’s accession to the Customs Union was recently introduced. Aside from Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan likewise are members in the Customs Union.
