Mayor Anatoly Pakhomov of Sochi, Russia, stated, ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics to be held in the city, that there are no gay people in Sochi.

Even though a person’s private life is no concern of the authorities, homosexuality is “not accepted” in the region, Pakhomov told BBC.

The mayor gave a negative response to the query as to whether gay people had to hide their sexuality in Sochi.

"No, we just say that it is your business, it’s your life. But it’s not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city,” Pakhomov stated.

Russian opposition leader Boris Nemtsov, however, said there were several gay bars in Sochi.

Russian President Vladimir Putin had said earlier that homosexuals would be welcome in Sochi for the Olympics but said, “just leave the children alone.”
