A 77-year-old Armenian villager who appeared in Azerbaijani captivity has mental disorder, head of Verin Karmraghbyur village Kamo Chobanyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

The head of village administration said Mamikon Khojoyan has been registered in mental hospital.

“The villagers saw him in the afternoon with a bucket in his hand. They asked where he was going. The man said he is going to gather grapes. Grapes in winter? The orchards are 8 kilometers far from the village. He went there and crossed the border accidentally,” Chobanyan explained.

The villager said he had learnt about the old man’s captivity from Azerbaijani media.

Azerbaijani media reported about an Armenian infiltrator but then were forced to admit a 65-year-old man was detained in an attempt to cross the border. Secretary of Azerbaijan’s commission on the POWs, missing persons and hostages Shahin Sailov said 65-year-old ( in reality 77-year-old) Khojoyan was stopped by the residents of Alibeyli village and was handed over to the servicemen. Local official said the citizen of Armenia was detained in an attempt to cross the river.
