The Istanbul Police Department on Combat against Illegal Drug Trafficking has sent a specialist police officer to Armenia.  

The Turkish police officer was sent to interrogate the Turkish citizen who is detained in the case into the discovery of 927 kilograms of heroin in a truck at Armenia’s customs checkpoint. 

The aforesaid department had contacted the Armenian side and expressed a wish to interrogate detained Turkish citizen O. U., 41, reports Anadolu news agency of Turkey.  

Receiving a positive response from the Armenian side, the Department’s specialist police officer was sent to Armenia.  

A truck with drugs heading to Georgia was found on January 17 at Armenia’s Meghri customs checkpoint on the border with Iran. During the inspection of the truck, the Armenian customs officers found 927 kilograms of heroin in a secret compartment. The truck driver, Georgian citizen Avtandil Martiashvili, 61, was detained. Turkish citizen Osman Ugurlu, an organizer of this major drug smuggling attempt, was later detained in Armenian capital city Yerevan. Such a large quantity of drugs was discovered for the first time in the region.
