YEREVAN. – Armenia’s New Political Culture Party Chairwoman Ani Zakharyan was about to be detained by the police on Thursday.

During Zakharyan’s protest march under the slogan “I am an Armenian citizen, and therefore I am not for sale,” the police officers approached Zakharyan, and demanded that she not speak over a loudspeaker and not disturb the people’s peace. Otherwise, they will detain her.

Solely Zakharyan and fellow party member Suren Avetisyan were taking part in the march, and no one joined them throughout the demonstration.

To our reporter’s query as to why no one joined her protest march, Ani Zakharyan responded:

“Our society is used to tumultuous actions, to go, ensure shows, catch a few people, [and] the police take [people] away. But [only] a small segment of our society is ready to perform conscious work around issues.”
