YEREVAN. – The Armenian authorities are required to deal with the fate of Merab Aloyan, who is sentenced to life in prison in Ukraine for the murder of businessman Shabab Aloyan.

Helsinki Association Chairman Mikayel Danielyan stated the aforesaid at a press conference on Tuesday.

“The authorities should definitely intervene and help Aloyan, especially under the current situation in Ukraine. Besides, Merab has serious health problems,” he said.

In Danielyan’s words, the Armenian parties have different ways of intervening in a court case.

“One of the ways is for the Armenian authorities to enter the prison once a month and see the living conditions of their citizen,” the Helsinki Association chairman added.

Mikayel Danielyan also stressed that Aloyan’s life is in danger in the prison.

Merab Aloyan’s attorneys and several NGOs in Armenia have repeatedly petitioned to the Office of the Human Rights Defender of Armenia, and the Ukrainian Ambassador to Armenia, but these requests were ineffective.
