YEREVAN. – A total of 154 countries will take part in this year’s Earth Hour, which will be observed on Saturday between 8:30pm and 9:30pm, local times.

In this connection, the external lighting of buildings and symbolic objects as well as the street lighting in Armenia’s capital city Yerevan will be turned off for one hour.

Aside from switching off symbolic lights, various events and concerts are held on that day across the world.

This year Yerevan will become the venue for a cycling flash mob, whose objective is to get the public involved in the Earth Hour by contributing to an increased use of alternative means of transportation.

The Earth Hour is an annual global World Wildlife Fund climate change initiative. The event began in Sydney in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights to show their support for action on climate change.
