YEREVAN. – Armenia could have abstained from voting on the UN General Assembly resolution on Crimea.

Non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party National Assembly (PAP NA) Faction member Stepan Margaryan stated the aforesaid at Friday’s NA briefings.

In his words, had Armenia abstained from voting, this would not have given Russia a reason to complain about and, at the same time, it would not have harmed Armenia’s own interests.

Armenia should have joined those countries which stand for a peaceful settlement of the matter,” Margaryan added.

In his view, such a stance would not have run counter to Armenia’s key agreements with Russia.

“If Armenia adheres to these agreements, it can maneuver in foreign policy quite extensively,” the PAP MP stressed.

But Stepan Margaryan added that, unfortunately, the Armenian authorities initially declared their neutrality yet acted otherwise.

As reported earlier, Armenia was among the eleven countries that on Thursday voted against the UN General Assembly resolution which declares invalid Crimea’s recent referendum calling for joining Russia.
