YEREVAN. – There will be solely local and fresh eggs in Armenia for Easter, Agriculture Ministry State Food Safety Service official Davit Ghulyan told reporters on Monday.

Ghulyan informed that the service conducted inspections at the respective businesses in capital city Yerevan and in Lori and Shirak Regions. As a result, the state-run agency twice confiscated expired eggs, and primarily from the storages of the importers.

He added that there will be no imported eggs in Armenia’s market for Easter, which will be celebrated on Sunday.
“The last consignment from abroad was imported on March 19. The [expiry] date for the retail eggs is 25 days; this means that they already should have been sold. And if there are leftovers, they should have been returned,” Ghulyan said.

He recalled that Armenia has not imported a large quantity of eggs since the beginning of the year, and this consignment totaled 2.9 million eggs. In January and February, Armenia’s domestic production totaled 59.6 million eggs.
