YEREVAN. – Opposition People’s Party Chairman Tigran Karapetyan does not comprehend why people in Armenia waste so many resources on the fight against the mandatory component of the new pension law in the country because, as per Karapetyan, this struggle sidetracks the public.

The party leader himself noted the aforementioned at a press conference on Monday.

“The struggle must be rebellious, swift, by the people; [and] not [by] making an arrangement. The fight against the funded [pension law] is not a fundamental issue; it’s not a matter that needs to be raised,” he said.

Karapetyan expressed a conviction that the aforesaid struggle will not succeed.

“The government will find a way to silence them. The new PM [Hovik Abrahamyan] will do nothing for the better. Will they distribute their money to the people? Never believe [it]!” the People’s Party leader stated.

Tigran Karapetyan added that there is no need to waste so many resources on a “minor” matter such as the funded pensions.

The “Dem.Am [I am against]” civic initiative, which opposes the mandatory component of the new pension law in Armenia, carries out actions throughout the country.

On April 2, the Constitutional Court (CC) of Armenia declared unconstitutional a whole series of articles in the new Law on Funded Pensions. Despite this ruling, however, the state-run financial institutions still oblige the employers to make mandatory funded pension cuts from the salaries of their employees. The respective reasoning is that the CC gave the parliament and the government until September 30 to amend the aforesaid law’s provisions that were deemed unconstitutional.
