YEREVAN. – President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan on Thursday received a US congressional delegation, led by Chairman Ed Royce of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Sargsyan welcomed the delegation to Armenia, and he stressed that this visit on the commemoration day of the Armenian Genocide and their meeting at the Genocide Memorial have a special meaning, informed the Press Office of the President. In the President’s words, first and foremost, this visit attests to the fact that the Armenian people are not alone in remembering their national tragedy. Sargsyan expressed his gratitude to Armenia’s friends at the US Congress for being with the Armenian people on the 99th anniversary of the Genocide.

The Armenian President also thanked the US for its assistance to Armenia, contribution to the maintenance of stability in the region, and active involvement in the matters of vital importance for Armenia. He assured that Armenia is determined to develop Armenian-American relations.

For their part, Congressman Ed Royce and the other delegation members noted that it is extremely important also for them to be in Armenia on this day. In Royce’s words, if history does not have a correct course and it is not accurately presented in history textbooks, the developments are at risk. According to him, this also is a reason why the Armenian Genocide topic is included in the history textbooks of the US and it is taught in the country.

The US Congress members also expressed willingness to continue their efforts toward Armenia’s development and the welfare of the Armenian people.

In addition, the interlocutors reflected on Armenia’s foreign policy priorities, and the regional issues and challenges.
