ISTANBUL. – Turkey wants to convey to the world the message that once PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan is elected President, there may be some radical changes in the country’s foreign policy, and in connection with the most complicated issues.

Ara Kocunyan, the Chief Editor of Jamanak Armenian daily of Istanbul, told the aforesaid to Armenian News-NEWS.am commenting on the Turkish Taraf daily’s news that Turkey plans to open the Armenian-Turkish border in September.

“There are regular conversations about the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border, but it is an unprecedented phenomenon to speak about it on the threshold of the presidential election.

“The Turkish paper speaks about preparations [for the border’s opening]. These were spoken about in the past, too, but now it is presented against a political backdrop [and] directly represented as an instruction given by PM Erdogan.

“It is interesting because, until now, very Erdogan’s position was presented as an obstacle against the opening of the Armenian-Turkish border. But this time they speak about an instruction of the PM.

“Such an important foreign policy decision in the lead-up to the presidential election in Turkey is not a subject of bringing dividends to PM Erdogan. But at least the Turkish side wants to show the world that during Erdogan’s presidency there will be improvements in Turkey’s foreign policy,” Kocunyan added.
