Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan’s state visit to Uruguay has kicked off on Wednesday.

Prior to his meeting with Uruguay President José Mujica, however, Sargsyan visited and laid a wreath to the monument of General José Artigas, a national hero of Uruguay.

During the talk between the two presidents, they discussed the avenues for the strengthening of ties and the development of cooperation between both countries. The Armenian President stressed that his country looks toward the development of a comprehensive agenda with Uruguay. The interlocutors also underscored the need to expand the legal and contractual framework between the two states, highlighted the productive collaboration between them within the framework of international organizations, and shared the view that the Armenian community of Uruguay greatly contributes to the development of Armenian-Uruguayan relations.

As per President Sargsyan, by becoming the first country in the world to recognize—back in 1965—the Armenian Genocide, Uruguay has stood on the platform of the defender of justice.

At the end of the talk, the two delegations signed documents on the development of cooperation between the two countries in several domains.

And as a result of the visit, the Presidents of Armenia and Uruguay signed a joint statement.

Serzh Sargsyan also met with Uruguay Vice President Danilo Astori, who is also Speaker of the Senate of Uruguay.

The interlocutors reflected on the ways for deepening interparliamentary ties between Armenia and Uruguay, and, in this connection, they reserved a major role to the friendship groups that function in the parliaments of the two countries.

Astori gladly accepted President Sargsyan’s invitation to visit Armenia, and he proposed Armenia to use Uruguay as a gate toward the development of its trade and economic relations with the other South American countries.

Separately, President Sargsyan visited the Armenia Square in the Uruguayan capital city Montevideo and paid tribute before the cross-stone which is placed in the vicinity of the square, and which eternalizes the Armenian Genocide victims.

In addition, Serzh Sargsyan paid a visit to the leading Conaprole dairy production company of Uruguay.
