YEREVAN. – Armenian National Assembly (NA) Vice-Speaker Eduard Sharmazanov on Wednesday received Latvian Ambassador Elita Gavele.

Sharmazanov, who also heads the NA Armenia-Latvia Friendship Group, underscored Latvia’s forthcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU), and expressed the hope that this will give new impetus to Armenia-EU political relations and Armenia-Latvia collaboration, informed the NA press service. He stressed that Armenia highlights the continuity of discourse with the EU.

The Armenian parliament vice-chairman also drew attention to a pacific settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and within the framework of the OSCE Minsk Group. Ambassador Gavele, for her part, noted that Latvia and the European organizations likewise advocate solely a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Separately, Eduard Sharmazanov stated that unless the international community recognizes the Armenian Genocide and considers it as the greatest evil committed against humanity, the chance of new genocides will not be ruled out.

The interlocutors also discussed the avenues for further development of Armenian-Latvian relations and interparliamentary ties.
