Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev received Herbert Salber, newly appointed European Union (EU) Special Representative for the South Caucasus.

Aliyev congratulated Salber on his appointment, and expressed confidence that the visit would be a good chance to get closely familiarized with the situation in the region, reported the APA news agency of Azerbaijan.

He touched on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and noted that Azerbaijan supports a peaceful settlement of the dispute, but added that Armenia demonstrated a “destructive position” and “ignored the international law.”

The Azerbaijani president also noted that if the problem was not settled justly and within the framework of the international law, the situation in the region would become more complicated.

In response, Herbert Salber said he had visited the region several times and gotten familiarized with the current situation. He added that the EU intends to make its contribution to the settlement of conflicts in the region.
