A Malaysian airliner was shot down over eastern Ukraine where there are ongoing fights between the government forces and militants, and this incident can be assessed as a war crime.

The aforesaid statement came from UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navanethem Pillay, reported the ITAR-TASS news agency of Russia.

The plane belonging to Malaysian Airlines was shot down on July 17, immediately after completing the report on Ukrainian crisis, Pillay said presenting the report on human rights in Ukraine.

UN commissioner also noted that they need to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing-777 passenger plane, which was en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur, crashed on July 17 in Ukraine’s Donetsk Oblast (Province), near the Russian border. There were 283 passengers—including three infants—and fifteen crew members onboard the aircraft, and all of them lost their lives.
