The U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved nomination of John Bass as new U.S. ambassador to Ankara, Hurriyet Daily News reported.

During the Senate hearings, John Bass encouraged Turkey and Armenia to move towards normalization as a means of creating the peaceful, productive and prosperous relationship that the people of both countries deserve. He said Erdogan's condolences ahead of April 24 indicate that the space for dialogue is opening. “But more can be done, and we encourage both sides to pursue a full, frank, and just acknowledgment of the facts surrounding the tragic events of 1915,” he emphasized.

The Armenians of America opposed Obama’s nomination of John Bass for U.S. Ambassador to Turkey. They are convinced Bass' Senate testimony compounds President Obama’s broken pledge to recognize the Armenian Genocide by retreating even further from the truth and tightening Turkey’s gag-rule on the U.S. Government.
