YEREVAN. – Forty percent of the tourists who visit Armenia are Russians.

Mekhak Apresyan, who is Head of the Tourism and Economic Development Department at the Ministry of Economy of Armenia, said the aforementioned at a press conference on Wednesday.

In his words, this is proved by the joint study prepared by the ministry and the Armenian National Statistical Service.

According to preliminary data, the tourists from Russia comprise 40 to 44 percent of the total number, the Europeans make up 14 to 15 percent, and the tourists from Iran constitute 7 percent. Furthermore, none of the European Union countries form a majority of these tourists.

Apresyan stressed that although the non-Armenians make up a large number among the tourists from Russia, 60 to 65 percent of these tourists are of Armenian descent.

“We have received these data through the questionnaires completed by tourists. The picture is varied. There are also foreigners, three to four generations of Diaspora Armenians, and representatives of the new wave of emigration [from Armenia],” Mekhak Apresyan added.
