YEREVAN. – One should not think that a political party can comment on every word by a foreign diplomat.

Non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia Party National Assembly (PAP NA) Faction member Mikayel Melkumyan stated the above-said at a press conference on Wednesday.

He noted the aforementioned in response to a request to comment on US Ambassador to Armenia John Heffern’s statement concerning the Vorotan Hydro Cascade of Armenia.

“The matter of the cascade’s privatization certainly is at the focus. It’s just that we didn’t include it as a separate item in the demands of the four [non-government NA factions (Armenian National Congress, PAP, ARF Dashnaktsutyun, and Heritage],” Melkumyan noted.

The Vorotan Hydro Cascade comprises three electric power plants. The Government of Armenia was the 100-percent shareholder of the Vorotan Hydroelectric Power Plant. In November 2013, however, the Public Services Regulatory Commission of Armenia had confirmed the deal to sell the cascade to the American ContourGlobal company, and for $180 million.

Ambassador Heffern has repeatedly stated that a successful completion of the aforesaid sale is beneficial for Armenia, too, since this will attest to the high level of the country’s investment zone.

In early June, the abovementioned “parliamentary four” submitted twelve demands to the Armenian authorities, and with respect to carrying out political and economic reforms in the country, and they set September 30 as deadline for the fulfillment of these demands.
