The parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict are not ready for peace, or war. Azerbaijan, as the losing party, is more interested in the resumption of the conflict.

British journalist and Caucasus expert Thomas de Waal told the Voice of America radio, and added that the status quo is convenient for the Armenian and the Azerbaijani parties, alike.

As for Russia’s role, the analyst noted that he does not see a major change in Russian strategy in the Caucasus, and that the country is focused on the Ukrainian issue.

De Waal added that neither the Armenian nor the Azerbaijani body politic is ready to make serious compromises. As per the analyst, the two presidents will lose their popularity if they make mutual concessions, and the great powers are busy with other matters. So, as per De Waal, there is no party for whom the solution of the problem is a priority.

Thomas de Waal also argued that even though the international community is ready to undertake efforts to establish stability in the region, it is not ready to do more.
